In less than 2 months, the 40th edition of the Gsiesertal Run, the second-largest ski marathon in Italy, will kick off. The Gsiesertal Run has never been canceled due to weather conditions since the distant year of 1984, except for the COVID-19-related cancellation in 2021. Even in winters with a total lack of snow, the event took place thanks to efficient snowmaking technology. In fact, in the past, the entire 42 km have been prepared with artificial snow on several occasions.
The Gsiesertal Run is one of the most popular and well-known ski marathons in the entire Alpine region. On Saturday, February 17, 2024, the race will be held in the Classic style, and on Sunday, Feb 18, in Skating. Annually, around 2,300 participants from over 40 nations take part. The organizer is particularly proud of the relatively high percentage of older participants (over 50), with women making up around 30%.
The famous post-race lunch and traditional “After-Race Parties” with live music in the heated tent are particularly popular among participants from around the world.
Online registrations are possible until Sunday, February 18, 2024, and on the organizer’s website, you can find a wide selection of accommodation options as well as suggestions for traveling to Italy.
At the moment, seven Olympic champions are listed on the honor board: Anders Aukland NOR, Ole Einar Björndalen NOR, Silvio Fauner ITA, Giorgio Di Centa ITA, Justyna Kowalczyk POL, Michail Botwinov RUS, Jewgeni Dementjew RUS. The legendary Björn Dahlie (eight-time Olympic champion) was, however, denied victory during his participation. The four-time Olympic champion Dario Cologna will compete in his first “Gsieser” in 2024.
We all look forward to another excellent event, true to the event motto: One idea, one vision, many emotions.
